GILBERT LUTTRELL—1960.

He was a great basketball and baseball player and terrorized all opposition in both sports. In baseball, he earned 4 letters, making All Conference and leading the conference in batting. He is more widely known for his basketball play, as a member of the 1959 State Tournament Team, and as Captain of the 1960 team he was named to the All District, All Region, All East Tennessee and All State team. He signed an athletic scholarship to Carson Newman, where he excelled in both sports. In baseball, he was All Conference 4 years and passed up the opportunity to try out with the Cincinnati Reds because of military obligations after graduation. In basketball, he was All Conference 3 years and Tournament MVP 2 years and was elected Captain his senior year. Each year at Carson Newman he was in the NAIA Championships. He was All American his last 2 years as well as the NAIA All Tournament Teams. He received the Charles Stevenson “Mr. Hustle” award in 1963 and named to the NAIA Distinguished Athletes Association. He was also named to the Christian Brothers College All Opponent Team, joining NBA stars Bill Bradley and Dave DeBusschere. He was also named an alternate on NAIA Tryout team for the 1964 Olympics Basketball Team and was named to the Carson Newman “Basketball Team of the Century”. He capped his great career off by being elected to the Carson Newman Sports Hall of Fame in 1964. After graduation, he served 3 years as an active duty officer with the Marines with a tour in Viet Nam. He received the Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and retired in the reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. After military service, he began his teaching and coaching career as assistant basketball and football coach at Gibbs High School. He then moved to the Webb School where he had a 27 year career as Basketball Coach (9 years), teacher and as Athletic Director and Principal. He then became Assistant Director of Schools of Loudon County. He was elected as a charter member to the Hall of Fame in 1970.
